The Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar, in Gujarat, is a part of the Indian Institutes of Technology system. The institution has started to work temporarily in 2008-09 campus Vishwakarma Government Engineering College, Chandkheda, Gandhinagar under the mentorship of IIT Bombay.
The Institute has excellent facilities in the form of classrooms, laboratory space, faculty offices, etc. Gandhinagar IIT now offers a 4 year B. Tech program in chemical, electrical and mechanical engineering. It also offers Ph.D. program in various disciplines of engineering (chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical), science (chemistry, physics and mathematics) sciences and the humanities and social sciences (economics, English, philosophy and sociology). The undergraduate curriculum is now equivalent to IIT Bombay with some modifications.
The Foundation has received over 300 applications from NRIs teaching at universities around the UK, the USA, Europe, Japan, Israel, South Korea, Canada and Singapore for teaching positions.
"It is a breakthrough because Indians get involved in groundbreaking research and academics and the pursuit of attractive opportunities in India. More than for us as faculty must demonstrate academic excellence, we are a new institute of IIT in relation to others and therefore more open of ideas, "says Jain.
The three faculty members who are expected to join in December include Sameer Dalvi has been specializing in solid-solid reaction products and phase equilibrium. Dalvi, who earned his Ph.D at IIT-Bombay, currently teaches at Columbia University.
In its first year, ie 2008-2009 academic year, offered three programs.
- Degree in Chemical Engineering Technology
- Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology
Admission to these programs is through Jee and students are admitted after completing 10 +2 schooling. Later, more academic and research programs will be offered in other IIT.
