Hofstra University

Hofstra University is the private,nonsectarian institution of higher learning located on Long Island,in Hempsted,New York Founded in 1935.But at beginning it was estabilished under the aegis of New York Univercity and originally known as "Nassu College".The extention of NYU was founded on the estate of a recently deceased wealthy couple, lumber magnate William S. Hofstra and his second wife, Kate Mason.The intent was realized in1937, when it became independent Hofstra College.

There are 1185 teachers, 7631 students on full time enrollment and a total of approximately 12,400 students in general, a figure which includes part-time students, graduates and law students. The average size of undergraduate classes is 22nd.The Unnivercity offers more than 140 undergraduate and 150 graduate programs including liberal arts and sciences, business, communication, education and allied human services and honors studies, as well as a school of law.

Campus has approximately 113 buildings on 240 hectares (0.97 km2). The portion of campus south of Hempstead Turnpike (NY Route 24) and west of California Avenue is located in the village of Hempstead. The northern part of the campus in Hempstead Turnpike and east of California Avenue is situated within a personal area of the town of Hempstead.

October 16, 2007 Hofstra University and North Shore-LIJ Health System announced plans to establish a new school of medicine. While it will not be the first medical school in Nassau County,it will be the first to grant the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. They are expecting to accept the first class in 2011.
